Richmond, Virginia, one of the oldest cities in America, was founded in 1737. Richmond is the 3rd and current Capitol of Virginia. Thomas Jefferson and Charles-Louis Clerisseau designed the capitol building together, and construction ran from 1785-1788. Free one-hour guided tours of the building can be taken by the public Monday-Saturday for both walk-ins and appointments. Belle Isle is a small 54 acre island in downtown Richmond that is open to the public from sunrise to sunset. The Island has a granite rock climbing wall, biking trails, historical sites and a gorgeous view of the city's skyline.
