Tuscaloosa, Alabama was founded in 1819 on the banks of the Black Warrior River. Tuscaloosa means "Black Warrior" and was named by settlers after the Choctaw Chief named Tuskaloosa. Tuscaloosa established The University of Alabama, home to the Crimson Tide football team by 1831. From 1826 to 1846 the city served as the state capital before it was moved to the city of Montgomery.
