In 1703 Mobile held the first Mardi Gras celebration in the United States thanks to Frenchman Nicholas Langlois, a celebration that continues year after year to this day. In 1814 Mobile was declared a town and was officially named a city by 1819 when it became a part of the state of Alabama.
